MARCH 2023, OUR FOUNDER ADELA MARIA MARIUS ON THE COVER OF IGLOO MAGAZINE ARHITECTURA LA FEMININ ALBUM togheter with Anda Andrei, Crina Arghirescu Rogard, Anca Cioarec & Brîndușa Tudor, Mihaela Criticos, Ilinca Păun Constantinescu, Iulia Stanciu, Oana Stănescu, Raluca Șoaita, Anda Ștefan, Simona Văleanu, Elena Viziteu Ionescu, Eliza Yokina, Iulia Oniciuc & Camina Zerva

From the first meeting, Adela is a breath of fresh air. She is the voice of the young generation, who with kindness and remarkable curatorial talent, brings together the fine arts and presents them to the general public. At the intersection of architecture, design, and art, her work reflects immense respect for tradition and craftsmanship, as well as for remarkable protagonists in the artistic fields, whom she embraces and exposes. Although the pretext platform is online, it becomes a place for surprising encounters with art and object design, in which the importance of ethical perspective describes a constant discourse.

The selection and catalog reflect Adela’s preferences and creative direction, where timeless objects share her vision of the beauty of Romanian design. Between visits to construction sites, exhibitions, and travels, her life describes an inspirational and upward trajectory.

An architectural project – a successful one, at least – should work simultaneously with the two extremes of the intellectual pyramid. It should be stimulating and sophisticated for the professionals, and understandable for the laymen (considering that architecture is, by definition, a profession that crosses both). It is both conceptual and popular, like art. How do you moderate these two extremes in your work for epretext, where you open the borders of Romanian design?

The power of an object lies in its ability to protect old traditions, to mold itself according to needs, to cancel, to contradict, or even to abolish, to create an emotion. When I choose a new object to be part of the curated selection for the epretext platform, I think about what it conveys, what it defends. The controversy of the design object, that precious or not object, incomprehensible or easily understandable, stands before me, witnessing the fact that humanity fights, creates, and does not stop. In front of it, I stand and ask myself from the extreme of a professional architect and a woman from a family of engineers, with an artist grandmother and great-grandmother, how can it serve the world with such changing needs? The essence of a design object is the understanding not that it could not have been built differently, but the way it was built. It speaks about the technique, the choice of material, and the mastery of both. On the other hand, the connection with the various floating spheres around architecture and design, whether it be photography or art, has led to many campaigns or editorials in which we presented the latest collections of objects. I then understood the power of design to be at the forefront, to be able to adapt. Design objects appeared in editorials signed by Cristian Tudose or Raluca Margescu, photographers who previously only photographed fashion editorials. It was a spectacle to see how the borders opened, and how the design object became everyone’s and spoke and transmitted to everyone.

DECEMBER 2022, ELLE DECORATION ROMANIA, A DISCUSSION WITH ADELA, THE FOUNDER OF EPRETEXT GALLERY. Let’s start from the beginning: the name of the gallery. Do we need a pretext for art? I remember when I thought of the name of this project, how much I wanted it to be a name that has a certain weight, perhaps even that is difficult to express at times. We know how difficult things can be in Romania and I wanted to show what we can do from here. The name of this project E.pretext came from the desire to romanticize a word -pretext- which at first sight is harsh and negative, and which in the end for us made a connection but also meaning, when we matched the name pretext with a man’s desire to have that object. I think we all have a pretext when we buy something, maybe it reminds us of grandparents, maybe it has a shape that stirs a memory in us, maybe something from our memory makes us want it. Find more in the printed version of 2022 DECEMBER ELLE DECORATION ROMANIA

FEBRUARY 2022, INTERVIEW FOR THE SENSE OF BEAUTY, ABOUT HARMONY IN LIFE WITH ADELA MARIA MARIUS. Tell us about EPRETEXT.

How did the idea came up and what is the purpose behind it? It was just before I graduated from the University of Architecture, in a discussion with my partner about my need to create and to arrange things in harmony. I always had a vision, a sense for style and harmony. I was also lucky enough to witness the behind-the-scenes of a gallery, the hard work, so I knew from the beginning what I would be dealing with, but none of it mattered — since I started to discover artists and designers and fall in love with craftsmanship and beauty, in general. The main core of the gallery was to share this beauty with a wider audience and to realise that the way we live, the way we socialise, we dress, the movies we watch or the jewellery we wear are part of who we are. For me, it’s literally all about a celebration of beauty.

Going back in time to your childhood, what was Adela dreaming of becoming as an adult? I always wanted to be an architect, even if my aunt, an architect herself, was begging me not to do so because it would be overwhelming. Nevertheless, since that day, I couldn’t imagine myself becoming something else. In my heart, I always knew I would find my way to enjoy it, despite the challenges.  And in the end, I knew it was my way of making sure that in this life I will create. I remember when I was a child, my grandmother would pick me up from school and on our way home I was looking at my favourite buildings, at their details, some of them had their display windows changed, some of the houses had new flowers. I think that I was always interested in people, society in general. I still believe we should all take a moment and observe more, like we used to do in our childhood.

Art and beauty are in the center of your work. Who educated you in this direction, who or what influenced your aesthetics?

I will always be grateful for having my grandmother. She is my biggest inspiration, my greatest influence in life, the reason I enjoy creating. She draws all the time, keeping a detailed journal of the everyday life though her sketches. Every time I start a project, I have her infinite courage in my mind, she is one of the most courageous people I know. Probably, I am just here to teach others what she taught me, “to enjoy life and leave your mark in this world.” She is my soul heritage.

NOVEMBER 2022, ATELIER MAGAZINE INTERVIEW, ABOUT EPRETEXT. Who is behind the EPRETEXT? Behind E.pretext are people who are passionate about both quality design and Romanian art. I am Adela, the founder of E.pretext gallery, who speaks for these people after listening to their stories. I believe my voice is here to bring unity to the E.pretext space and is not a voice that interferes over the authentic story of each individual designer. The E.pretext gallery is more of an intersecting space between architects, designers and artists and less of a shop per se. Of course, we do end up selling, but most of the time the sale is done by advising the client. For example, an interior design project, in which, besides many other established designers from all over the world, we bring in those Romanian designers we believe in.

NOVEMBER 2021, THE SATURDAY JOURNAL, A DISCUSSION WITH ADELA MARIA MARIUS

To what extent do the spaces we live in influence our lives and what difference do you think it makes when we introduce design elements into the home? I think when you take care of your space, the space pleases you. After all like everything in this life. For me harmony in the home means a lot, but all the associations I make in the home I make them first in my heart. I try not to like things in a superficial way, I try to understand the artist behind the work, to connect with his values more than the object and to end up taking home a part of his vision of life, which helps me broaden my horizons.I think it’s up to us to look at objects differently and I think contemporary art and design gives you that tool, to understand, to see the world differently. I often see in the clients I advise the joy of discovering the world differently.
